Robots at home

Choosing a robot for your home

A home robot can offer company, help with a specific chore or open up a new way to learn. Start with the experience you want, then check how the robot fits the people, spaces and routines in your home.

Choose the kind of help you want

Household robotics spans several distinct jobs. A companion focuses on interaction or play. A cleaning robot targets floors. A learning robot makes coding or construction tangible. A garden or pool robot works on a particular outdoor task.

Emerging home assistants aim at a broader range of household work. Their readiness and availability need closer attention: NEO is offered through a preorder programme, while Memo is entering an invite-only beta.

Measure the space it will use

Consider where the robot moves, waits and charges. Measure low furniture, narrow passages and changes in floor level. Check the maker's guidance for stairs, rugs, reflective surfaces and obstacles that occur in your home.

A dock also needs usable access. Allow room to handle water tanks, dust bags or the robot itself. Think through how you will move and store it if you want to use it in several areas.

Check interaction, connection and privacy controls

For a companion, decide whether you want a desk character, moving play partner or remote view around home. Check the available languages, volume controls and the kinds of interaction shown in complete demonstrations.

For any connected robot, review its camera and microphone controls, account access, app support and internet requirements. Ask which activities run locally, which use cloud services and how remote access is approved and managed.

Count the care that remains

List the routine jobs you will still do. Cleaning robots may need brushes, filters, bags or mop parts checked; a dock's functions should be compared individually. Roborock's Qrevo L listing, for example, separates mop washing, drying and dustbin emptying.

For outdoor robots, include lifting, retrieval, storage and access to the charger. Read pool-cleaning coverage carefully: floor, wall and waterline cleaning describe different areas, and surface parking is a retrieval feature.

Match the purchase to your location and expectations

Confirm that the selected product, app and support are offered where you live. A country selector or an international product page alone does not establish delivery, warranty handling or local servicing for a particular model.

For a retail robot, check the current configuration and delivery terms. For a preorder or beta, also ask what participation involves, which capabilities are available at the start and whether your household is eligible. Keep planned improvements separate from the functions you need today.
